Coronavirus Update

Dear Mount Gilead Family,

After talking with the Deacons and based on the current situation with the Covid-19 outbreak in America we have decided to close the Church until conditions improve. This applies to all activities as well as Sunday morning worship.  We will re-evaluate to see what the situation is as things move forward.

We do not take this action lightly, and we are not motivated out of fear, but out of wisdom.  This is an unprecedented event, and while we do not believe we have any cases of the virus in our direct community we are taking this step to prevent the spread of the virus and to protect the people in our community.  Unfortunately the traditional methods of stopping the virus (staying home if you are sick) do not seem to be working for the coronavirus because it can spread before symptoms are shown. As one of my pastor friends said “as this virus spreads, it is already putting a strain on our medical community faithfully serving those who are in need. Serving our church community, our towns, our regions, as well as the medical community, by instituting social distancing practices is a tangible way we can care for those who are more vulnerable or in need.”

While we are not going to meet in person, we need to remember that the Church of God is bigger than when we meet on Sunday.  We are still the Church even when we are not gathered together and we are called to follow Jesus no matter what our circumstances may be.  In order to help our church do that here are several practical things that we can do:

  • We will be having messages live on Facebook at 11AM on Sunday.  We are not trying to recreate Sunday morning worship, but we will be addressing the situation and looking to God’s word for guidance.  To access you do not need a Facebook account, just follow this link:
  • If you are sick and in need of prayer or assistance, do not hesitate to reach out.  We are still a community that takes care of each other, especially when times are difficult. If you are in need of food during this time, the food pantry is working to figure out a way to make sure those in need can still get what they need.  We will have updates on that in the future.

  • We ask that you continue to worship through giving.  Even though we are not physically meeting, the costs of running the church do not change.  You can give online by clicking here, or you can always send a check in the mail to Mount Gilead Baptist Church 4768 Shannon Hill Road, Columbia, VA 23038

  • Keep your eyes open as we continue to update you on the situation as time moves forward.

  • Finally, remember that God is in control and we are called to follow him.  Matthew 6:33-34 says “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”  So let us be God’s hands and feet in this situation. Check in with one another via phone and email. Pray with brothers and sisters and serve them as best you can.  Look for opportunities to go above and beyond (with wisdom) in love and generosity to those around you.

In Christ,

Pastor Ben Boyd
